Mathematics, put to work for people, places and living things.
The Institute for Applied Ontological Mathematics is a nonprofit research institute. We take the most dependable kind of knowledge people have ever made, mathematics, the kind that does not wear out or change its mind, and put it to work wherever being sure matters: in the hive and on the farm, in the power system, in the machines and the care that people depend on.
Our Technology is Ontological. Our Engineering is Constructive.
01 · Why mathematics
The quiet promise inside everything that works
A bridge carries its load because someone did the arithmetic before the first car crossed. A satellite finds its orbit, a battery holds its charge, a medicine reaches the right dose: each rests on a promise mathematics made and kept. It is how people learned to know something will hold before trusting their lives to it.
What has changed is that computers can now check mathematics completely, every step, and run what it describes on real machines. That turns “we believe it works” into “here is why it works, and you can check.” We use that change in three plain ways.
01See clearly
Measure what is really happening
A reading is only as useful as the trust you can place in it. We build sensing whose numbers carry their own evidence: where they came from, when, and how sure they are.
A hive’s temperature, weight and sound, recorded continuously and honestly, gaps included.
02Know for sure
Check that a rule holds every time
Testing shows a rule worked in the cases you tried. A proof shows it holds in every case. Computers can now check such proofs completely, step by step, so certainty stops depending on anyone’s word.
A solar system that can never schedule more work than its stored energy allows.
03Act safely
Let automation help, within proven bounds
Smart systems make suggestions; some of them will be wrong. We let a suggestion through only when it stays inside limits that have been proved, so a mistake becomes a refusal rather than an accident.
An AI may advise a machine; only what can be established may move it.
02 · Where it helps
One way of working, many places it can do good
The same habits (measure honestly, prove what matters, act within safe bounds) help wherever something important depends on getting it right. Some of these fields are running today; others are waiting for the right partner. Each says plainly which it is.

03 · How we work
Every gift leaves something anyone can check
Everything we learn, we publish, with the evidence that lets anyone check it, including the ideas that did not work. Our gifts come from people who believe that a better world is built on things that can be trusted, and that the tools for trust should belong to everyone.
A contribution here does not disappear into overhead or into a result decided in advance. It becomes a question asked carefully, a tool that answers it, and a public record of what was found, good news or not. That is the whole cycle, and it repeats.
- 1
Discover
Ask a precise question, in the field or at the bench.
- 2
Build
Make the instrument, the model or the proof that answers it.
- 3
Grow
Run it on real equipment, in real conditions.
- 4
Learn
Measure what happened, including what did not work.
- 5
Teach
Publish it openly, so the next person starts further ahead.
What a gift can become: equipment for a field site, compute for a long proof, bench time to commission an instrument, or the hours that turn results into something others can use. Equipment offers are reviewed for fit, safety and cost, and we say plainly when something would not fit. How support works →
04 · Who we are
An independent institute, open by design
The Institute was founded and is led by Richard Goodman and Stephanie Goodman, in equal roles. It is organized as a Focused Research Organization (FRO): a small, focused team aimed at defined goals, producing public goods that neither a university lab nor a startup is built to deliver.
Its software comes from Apoth3osis, a separate company that licenses it royalty-free for research and publication. That keeps the Institute independent: what it studies and what it publishes are decided by the question, not by a product.
- Standing
- A Michigan nonprofit corporation, recognized by the IRS as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) and classified as a private operating foundation. Nothing on this site is tax advice; a donor's own adviser should confirm how a particular gift is treated.
- What we publish
- Mathematics checked by computer, and the working programs that come from it, into the public scholarly commons: free to academic readers and individuals.
- Where the software comes from
- Apoth3osis Labs (Equation Capital LLC) owns the underlying software and licenses it to the Institute royalty-free for research and publication; Equation Capital hosts this site at no charge. The Institute is a separate entity.
